U.S. Customs and Border Protection and ICE Homeland Security Investigations seized 22,848 shipments of counterfeit and pirated goods in 2012. Handbags and wallets were the top commodities seized, increasing 142.2 percent year-over-year. 697 websites that were involved in trafficking those goods have also been shut down.
The seized goods were worth around $1.26 billion if sold at the retail price for legitimate goods. China continues to be the top source economy for counterfeit and pirated goods, accounting for 72% of the seized shipments.
